Seoul Plaza was the stage of historical events that marked a milestone in Korea’s modern history, including the March 1 Movement and the June Democracy Movement, and was the yard for citizens’ festivals during the 2002 World Cup. The history of City Hall Plaza begins in 1897 when King Gojong fled to the Russian Legation and returned to his private home (Doksu Palace). King Gojong, who rose to the throne, built a radiation-type road centered around the Daehanmun Gate of Deoksugung Palace, and installed a square and a circumcision at the front in order to renew the foundation of the country. Since then, the plaza in front of Daehanmun Gate has become a major stage for citizens, ranging from the protection of King Gojong, the March 1st Movement, the April 19 Revolution, protests against the Korea-Japan talks and democratization in June.
