The Ropeway is a nice way to get to Owakudani, but the hike from here to Owakudani goes thru old forest and is highly recommended. The trail head is on the right (mountain) side of the parking lot. NOTE The trail up the mountain here may be closed due to volcanic activity (poison gas etc). If it is closed (it will be well marked if it is closed), take the cable car up instead. Takes at least 2 hours to hike up to the top...maybe more. I only go with my boys so not sure how long it would be with just adults.
