Der Bebelplatz sollte das Zentrum des geplanten Forum Fridericianum werden. Von den Plänen wurde allerdings nur der Bau des Opernhauses verwirklicht. Im Mai 1933 war der Bebelplatz der Ort, an dem die Nationalsozialisten rund 20.000 Bücher verbrannten. Der Bücherverbrennung fielen Werke von Erich Kästner, Siegmund Freud, Kurt Tucholsky, Thomas Mann und andere Bücher jüdischer und kritischer Autoren zum Opfer. Unter dem Bebelplatz erinnern heute die leeren Regale der versunkenen Bibliothek an diese Nacht. Der Raum kann nur durch eine im Boden eingelassene Glasplatte besichtigt werden.

Surrounded by building that all go back to the 18th century and to Frederick the Great. You can see the National Opera House, the main building of the Humboldt University and the Law Faculty building, which used to be a library. In the middle of the square the Nazis burnt book on the night of May 10th, 1933, shortly after they came to power. There is a very impressive monument for that even called the empty library by the Israeli artist Micha Ulman.

The neoclassical buildings of this monumental area is the Catholic cathedral in Berlin. Known as the Cathedral of Santa Eduvigis (St. Edwige), it will be very easy to recognize the building because its design emulates the famous Pantheon Agrippa in Rome.
