Almost all that remains of York Castle built by William the Conqueror, and has served as a prison and a royal mint in its time.
Originally a castle built by William I, an explosion rendered the castle unusable by the military is was used as a jail/prison until 1929. Situated opposite the York crown courts!
When it is a bright or sunny day, I would recommend visiting the tower then as you will get great 360 views of York. If you have a York Pass, Clifford's Tower is included in this.
Enjoy the stunning views from this proud symbol of the might of our medieval kings. It was at the heart of William the Conqueror’s fearsome ‘Harrying of the North’ campaign to stamp out resistance in the rebellious north after his 1066 invasion. For centuries after, the ‘Kings Tower’ played a key role in the control of England surviving flood, fire and siege.
