Recently, the City of Mount Holly extended the trail south following the Catawba River. The trailhead, parking, playground and viewing area are next to Mountain Island Lake Dam, a hydroelectric dam owned by Duke Power. There are several fishing areas including a handicap fishing site perfect for catfish and bass fishing. Almost the entire length of the trail is shaded by mature trees during the spring and summer months. There are several foot bridges and a canoe launch along the way till the trail ends in a small loop.
