It was inaugurated in March 2017 between Cordoaria and Virtudes and pays tribute to two fado houses that formerly existed in the neighbourhood, Taberna S.Jorge and Cozinha Real do Fado. It all started when Carlos Soares left Casa da Mariquinhas, where he worked for six years. “I realized there was a market for this. In the 1980s there were close to 25 professional fado houses in Porto and at the moment there are only four, including the Taberna”, says the responsible. The fixed cast of fado singers includes names such as Rute Rita, Aurélio Perry and Nélson Duarte, but there are also regular guests, from Cátia de Oliveira to Maria do Sameiro. The idea is to cross “several generations of fado”, points out Carlos Soares. “There are very good fado singers and instrumentalists in Porto, contrary to popular belief. There always have been, but many had to go to Lisbon because of the opportunities.” Fado is made with dinner, with a mandatory minimum consumption of €35 per person (there are vegetarian options) and two to three fadistas per night.
