The church of Faneromeni is located on the new road towards Agia Marina (Faneromeni str) 1 km from the port of Aegina and is part of the outlying property of Panagia Chrysoleontissa. It is located in a catacomb, while there are many legends and beliefs concerning the church and the icon of the Virgin Mary that it holds. It dates back to the 13th century and consists of three different churches. The central external one is abandoned but two smaller churches are hidden under the so-called ''CATACOMB'' . For those who do not know the CATACOMBS are defined as the cave structures of the Christians who chipped the rocks below the surface of the earth, opened underground corridors and hiding places and built temples, tombs and crypts. The underground area referred to by many as a ''catacomb'' consists of two chambers. One is dedicated to the Aeginean Agia Athanasia and the other to the Virgin Mary. The valuable icon of the Virgin Mary located in the church, which was built in the 17th century, shows her in prayer.
