The Museum collects, preserves, museological processes and presents the Croatian national, cultural and historical heritage from the early Middle Ages to the present day. Although there is no permanent display because of lack of space at the current, temporary location, still organizing temporary exhibitions Museum has for years presented to the public individual collections and realized thematic exhibitions from Croatian social, political, economic and cultural history. Croatian History Museum has evolved from the former National Museum, founded in Zagreb in 1846. It is located in a remarkable baroque palace Vojković-Oršić-Kulmer-Rauch in the Upper Town, built in the late 18th century. Holdings include over 200,000 museum objects located in the Palace and Mestrovic Pavilion. The items are arranged in 17 diverse museum collections such as the collection of stone monuments, the collection of paintings, prints and sculptures, art collection of the 20th century., Sacred collection, collection of objects from everyday life, collection of flags and flag tape, collection of uniforms, medals Collection , medals, plaques and badges, Heraldry and Sphragistic collection, collection weapons, Map collection, Documentary collection I and II., collection of varia, collection of photographs, films and negatives, Archaeological collection and the Numismatic collection. The museum also has a library that is primarily intended for professional museum staff, but is also open to external users. Dealing with publishing activities, as a means of presenting the Croatian cultural heritage, the museum has published over forty catalog collections and catalogs fifty thematic exhibitions. Museum operates outside Zagreb, that takes care of the Memorial Museum Ivana Goran Kovacic in Lukovdol.
