THE BAZEOS TOWER On the 12th Km of the main road linking the capital city of Naxos (Chora), with the inland (Halki, Filoti), the Bazeos Castle dominates the land leading to the seacoast of Agiassos. The tower dates back to the 17th century and belongs to the most typical group of monuments in Naxos, dating from 13th to the 18th century. The reason for the common presence of such buildings has its sources in the social and historic conditions prevailing in post-Byzantine years. Few meters from Sangri Village, on the way to Damalas Village approximately 12km from Naxos town, located the Bazeos Tower. It was built in 1600 BC and originally functioned as a monastery of the Holy Cross, until the early 19th century. After 1830, it came into possession of the newly established Greek state. In the late 19th century, the Greek government sold the tower to Bazeos family. Now it is used as a place for cultural activities.
