Sports Basement hosts several free and low-cost events and classes for activity and outdoor minded people. I especially recommend the Acro Yoga taught by some noteworthy people every second Wednesday at 7:30pm in Berkeley.

Like REI, but local and better pricing. They rent all kinds of snow, camping and bike gear too. Bonus: It's located in a converted ice skating rink.
