Food Scene

This place is busy on the weekends and closed on Tuesdays. But you can grab a local brew (they have a great beer and cider selection) while you wait in line to order. Vermont establishments close early, so be aware that it's only open until 10 pm on Friday/Saturday and 9 pm other days of the week.

Simon Pearce is a wonderful all-around experience. Situated in a converted mill, the restaurant overlooks the spectacular mill falls. You can watch glassblowers as they work during daytime hours, and shop in the flagship store before dinner. We prefer eating lunch here so you can appreciate the view in the daylight, and lunch options are always well-prepared and yummy. It’s a good spot for dinner, too, but prices are special occasion (and if it’s dark, you can’t see the falls, although you can hear them!).

The most delicious northern Thai food we’ve ever had—seriously. This restaurant was such a surprise to us – it’s next to the Randolph golf course of all places, but they put out excellent flavors. Be adventurous – you can get Pad Thai anywhere, but if you order one of the specials, or ask the waiters about their favorite menu items, you will have a memorable meal for a very reasonable price.

Well-crafted savory meat and vegetarian pies in a hip atmosphere. Might sound strange, but is so so good! Kate’s favorite pie is the curried lamb and Sean’s is the potato and artichoke. Service is unhurried, but friendly and this is a good casual option. Pies are not cheap ($11 or $12), but make for a filling meal. They have the best baked goods in the area, too (cookies, sweet pies, cakes, pastries, etc.).

This is a special place and well worth the hour-long drive if you appreciate thoughtful, elevated dining experiences. Warm, rustic atmosphere and long, unhurried meals of delicious, farm-to-table delights. Impeccable but not stuffy. Excellent drinks and wine list, very friendly owner and exceptional service. This is where we go for birthdays and anniversaries, or any other excuse we can drum up.

Really great pizza – the area’s best, in our opinion. They also have sandwiches, salads, pastas, starters, and a small kids’ menu.

Grab the best cup of artisan coffee in the area here, along with a locally-made pastry, and the very-locally made brews - this place is also a tap room for Tunbridge-based brewer, Upper Pass. They serve dinner with music, live or vinyl, on Tuesdays (Taco Tuesday) and Fridays and have food available Monday through Saturday nights. A great place to grab a beer or a cup of joe (or some beans or cans to go).

Wolf Tree is a cozy new cocktail bar with a sophisticated, but not overly-fussy drink menu, nice, local charcuterie options, and a low-lit, rustic-sleek atmosphere. A lovely place to start or end your evening out in the Hanover / White River Junction area. (They do not offer a full food menu.)

This small, no-frills tap room is a hidden gem in White River Junction, pouring some of the most talked-about craft beer in Vermont. The beer is always good (they usually have four on tap) and we've never run into a crowd here. Buy growlers, merch, and some cans. You can also get their beer at the BBQ place across the parking lot: Big Fatty's.

A giant warehouse full of salvaged treasures! You never know what you're going to find here, but it's always fun to take a peek. We've come home with a beautiful set of retro wicker chairs and an old workbench that we've repurposed as a counter for the kitchen at Tunbridge Cottage. Their inventory is always changing.
