Located in the active fishing village of Quidi Vidi, this restaurant is housed in one of the oldest buildings in St. John's, and is owned by one of Canada's Top Chefs (as in, actually on Top Chef Canada!) Todd Perrin. The restaurants boasts a comfortable atmosphere, great food, and sometimes live music at brunch. The mantra of Mallard is all about local food --- a celebration of Newfoundland and Labrador. Great for a nice dinner out, or a more casual brunch.

A vibrant, lively restaurant, Adelaide has creative cuisine and cocktails, and the best oysters in St. John's. Only open from 5pm onward, and they don't take reservations, so arrive early, or expect a wait. My usual approach with Adelaide is put my name on the waitlist and then head down to Merchant Tavern for a cocktail while I wait. Makes for a great night!

Re-Opening soon (in August) -- this restaurant makes the best charcuterie in St. John's. With a focus on local cuisine, and perfecting dishes with all elements made it house, Chinched (a Newfoundland term for stuffed) makes for an excellent evening meal out.

Another great coffee shop in St. John's, with an excellent bakery -- including incredibly buttery croissants, and some of the best bread pudding I've ever had. Also, if you're popping in for something more hearty, the fish cakes are deadly (As in, really good).

A short drive out from St. John's (~25 min), Cape Spear is the most easternly point in North America. A great day-trip would be to head out to Cape spear, go for a little walk or hike, and then head to Petty Harbour to enjoy a coffee and snack at the WaterShed Coffee Shop or a feed of fish at Chafe's Landing.

Arts & Culture

Locally joked as looking like the Box that the Basilica came in, the Rooms is the Provincial Museum and Art Gallery, and an incredible local gem. It always has great exhibits on, and certainly worth a visit.

Parks & Nature

This is such an incredible resource in St. John's -- and the best way to enjoy and experience this province. The East Coast Trail runs along the east coast of the avalon peninsula, with several access trails that break up the hikes into everything from 2 to 17 km. You can access the maps on their website, or I have a set at the house that you're welcome to check out -- I'd also happily provide recommendations for segments to take on!
