KNOSSOS PALACE IN HERAKLION The archaeological site of Knossos is sited 5 km southeast of the city of Iraklion. There is evidence that this location was inhabited during the neolithic times (6000 B.C.) . On the ruins of the neolithic settlement was built the first Minoan palace (1900 B.C.) where the dynasty of Minos ruled. This was destroyed in 1700 B.C and a new palace built in its place. The palace covered an area of 22,000sq.m, it was multi- storeyed and had an intricate plan. Due to this fact the Palace is connected with thrilling legends, such as the myth of the Labyrinth with the Minotaur.

Sightseeing

Since Ottoman Turks conquested the city of Chania, they are settled on the east part of the city, in districts of Kasteli and Splanzia, while Christians are mainly concentrated on the western side of the city, in the district of Topanas. The district of Splantzia is located southeast of the Kasteli hill and during the Ottoman rule this was the Turkish neighbourhood of the town of Chania. Central square of the district was the homonymous Splantzia square (current 1821 square), that was for the Turks what the Sintrivani square was for the Christians.

Crete’s only remaining synagogue (dating from the 15th century) was badly damaged in WWII and reopened in 1999. It sports a mikve (ritual bath), tombs of rabbis and a memorial to the local Jews killed by the Nazis. Today it serves a small congregation and is open to visitors. Find it on a small lane accessible only from Kondylaki street.

LIGHTHOUSE OF CHANIA Its original construction is placed between 1320 and 1355; however, later on, between 1353 and 1364 it was abandoned, being too shallow and overly exposed to the strong northern and western winds. From then on, the port of Heraklion, which was bigger, was upgraded as the most important one in Crete. The decline of the port of Chaniacontinued with the fall of the city to the Turks (1645), since the conquerors did not involve themselves in its maintenance or repair. Finally it was Muhammad Ali, the viceroy of Egypt who realized the importance of the port to local economy; for that reason, he repaired the pier and conducted dredging works.
