Spain’s largest cathedral and the third largest in Europe! (After St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and Milan’s cathedral). The cathedral is a wonder of gothic architecture, and interesting to see aspects of its Moorish past, most notably the tower “La Giralda” – a prominent symbol of the city – which was a former minaret. The cathedral is a UNESCO world heritage site, along with the nearby Real AlCazar palace and the Archivo de las Indias. Christopher Columbus is buried here. It’s well worth a hike up the ramped walkway to the top of La Giralda for outstanding views of the city.

A dynamic and lively spot in the centre of the city – great for people-watching, relaxing with a drink in one of the many pavement bars and restaurants, or going to the top for an excellent panoramic view of the city from above! Officially known as the Metropol Parasol, the locals refer to this enormous urban sculpture as “Las Setas” (The Mushrooms), for their form. It’s the world’s largest wooden structure. There’s also a Roman antiquarium beneath the plaza, which was discovered during the construction of the sculpture.

An absolutely delightful park. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. This beautifully landscaped park was part of the centrepiece of the World Expo of 1929, along with the equally majestic Plaza de España, which sits adjacent to the park and is also worth exploring on the same visit.

This majestic building and plaza was the centrepiece of the World Expo of 1929. Look out for the opportunity to spend a while rowing around its canal and under its ornamented foot bridges. The plaza has been used as a backdrop for many films, including Lawrence of Arabia’s Cairo and Star Wars Ep. II: Attack of the Clones’s Naboo! When visiting here, be sure to explore the adjacent Maria Luisa park.
