This is a very nice restaurant also located at Sharky's pier. They have a happy hour from 4-6 typically which has great deals on their gourmet type food. Their Sea Foam Margarita is one of the best margaritas I have had, and I am always on the search for the best one! This has a lovely view, ambiance and the food is very good.

This is a nice little Italian place that has great pizza. I would categorize it as "fancy" pizza, but there is a lot of variety and the crust is good. I like the non-tomato based pizza in general, so I love the Naughty Woman pizza. They have a nice wine list as well. They also do take-out which makes it easy for dining at home, or on the beach for sunset!

I eat at this little cafe more often than anywhere else, to be honest. They have breakfast and lunch, and their food is delicious and fresh. I often ride my bike to town just to get their chicken salad sandwich or croq nordic.

Experience lunch (or dinner) in a soda fountain that dates back to the 1920s (check out the old pictures on the wall!) There is outdoor seating as well as indoor booth and bar seating. The fountain drinks and desserts are very large and shareable, and everyone who works there is super friendly. However, don’t order pizza here on a Friday night, as it’s a go-to and will take an hour for your pizza to be ready, even if they quote you 20 minutes as your wait time. But if you must order pizza on a Friday night, pull up a chair at the soda fountain bar and order a milkshake while you wait. Or a malt. Or an ice cream soda. So fun and retro!

Cute local chain over by Publix with old school deli subs with freshly sliced deli meats and cheeses. Not fancy, but seriously yummy after a long bike ride or outdoor excursion (hint: toss the cooler in the car with water bottles and pick up before heading to off-island adventures). We loved to grab a few of these before driving up to Siesta Key to kayak off Turtle Beach or driving over to Lake Myakka State Park. My kids especially enjoyed the salami and ham subs as well as their steak and cheese.

Venice Beach has a lot of parking, as well as restroom facilities, making it a hot spot for beach visitors. It is a lovely beach, but tends to be more crowded than the others. I usually go to Venice Beach for specific events - I like to attend the drum circle on Sunday evenings - or there sometimes is music in the pavillion.

Playgrounds

Perfectly walkable or bikeable from Villas Dr., just take a left on Harbor, and the second right onto Sorrento, the park is on the left! The little tot playground and the big playground make this one fun for kids 2-10, and it even includes a cute parent-infant swing! Cute little picnic tables and lots of green space make it a lovely picnic spot, but beware there aren’t bathrooms.

From Villas, Caspersen is an easy and gorgeous mile and a half bike ride. There are many trails that wind throughout this park that would be lovely for walking, but due to sand, the bikes are better for the road than for these trails. However, there is plenty of bike and car parking, but it gets super busy during the weekends! The playground is located at the end of the second parking lot and is entirely shaded. Gopher tortoises abound in this area, and they are so used to humans that you can even “pet” one (carefully!). They also love cantaloupe if you really want to experience feeding a tortoise :). There are swings, but this playground is mid-sized and best for kids ages 2-7. There are also picnic tables, a shaded pavilion, and bathrooms :).

Open for in-person browsing as long as everyone is masked, this library offers three month access for a small fee for people staying from out of town. They are super friendly and welcoming to kids, and they have a great kids’ section. Ask the children’s librarian about their weekly activity bags, too! About fifteen minutes off the island on Siesta Key, this is a great place to kayak or paddleboard. My three yr old fit easily in a single kayak between my knees, but if they have the double kayak, you could more comfortably seat two adults and a child (although, the guy renting the kayaks told me he once had a dad fit himself and FOUR kids in one double kayak!!). The long blonde haired guy is the most laid back person ever, and he will let you have the kayak for $25 for 2ish hours, and by 2ish hours, he means you can really have it for most of the afternoon. You can kayak in an old shark tank that was previously part of MOTE aquarium’s research lab, see Stephen King’s house, and access a portion of the beach only accessible by boat. At the right times of year, you can even kayak with dolphins and manatees (look for manatees by the docks!). Pro tip: Go on Sunday afternoons as most rentals empty, and they are rarely busy on Sundays. They ask for the boats back at 4, though, so right around lunch is ideal. Dry bags are provided, and you can throw a picnic lunch in the dry bag and picnic at the private beach!

Bring the bikes, bug spray (all year round!!!), and a camera because the wildlife abounds! It’s one of the few areas where crocodiles and alligators cohabitate, and it is one of the largest state parks in Florida and only about 15 minutes inland off the island (take 41 up to 75 and go west). Admission is only $6/car or $2/person, and they offer boat tours, too! There is a very cool suspension bridge that lets you walk through the canopy, and if you are brave enough, you can walk up to the top of the observation tower and see above the canopy for miles!

There is a gorgeous swimming hole in this natural spring, and it has a jumping platform! You will want to bring goggles or snorkel masks because the water is crystal clear, and you can also bring pool noodles. You can rent kayaks, but it gets very busy, especially on the weekends. This boardwalk through the Everglades is beautiful, but you will likely see alligators so consider putting littles in a stroller or in a back carrier and wearing closed toe shoes. Because it is more remote, I recommend doing this with two adults and not going alone, but it is a beautiful place to explore. Many areas in the Everglades also offer airboat tours!

This 14 mile bike path can be modified at several points to make it more accessible for the younger crowd. If you wish to cut it down to about half, bike (or drive) down to Caspersen beach and take the paved path by the playground, which will hook you into the Venetian Waterway park. This stretch runs along the waterway from Caspersen up to one of the boat bridges and is paved and traffic free. From the bridge, you can either turn around and come back, which will be about 3-4 miles, or go UNDER the bridge so you don’t have to cross Rt. 41 and continue riding on the sidewalk or in the bike lane for the next half mile or so until you can bear to the right over a cute little foot bridge to continue with the waterway trail or stay along 41 for one more mile to reach Publix, then cross 41 and take San Marco back to Harbor to get back home. On the waterway, keep your eyes and ears open for bobcats (yes, really!), but they won’t bother you and are used to people. If the weather is good you may even see a bunch of gopher tortoises!
