I have no idea why the website won't accept the Waitakere Ranges but this is where I mean!!!! (I don't know what the Auckland Centennial Park is LOL) Total contrast to city- beautiful native bush. Check out the various parts of the Hilary Trail. There is a visitor centre where you can get info.

Great beach. Also try Orewa (further North). East coast beaches have white sand and are pretty calm and family friendly.

Also Bethells and Muriwai Beaches. These beaches have black sand and wild surf- these are dangerous beaches so stay between flags- tourists are always drowning!

Snorkelling! Don't feed the fish... this is a marine sanctuary. Take flippers and snorkel or hire them there.

Fantastic new waterfront development- was old dangerous goods wharfs, now upmarket restaurants and bars, and fantastic park for kids. Check out the courtyard in the Seafood Market for live jazz on Sundays.

Beaches, unique community, lovely ferry trip- just be aware of ferry timetable as they aren't 24/7! There is a car ferry from East Auckland and a pedestrian ferry from the CBD.
