Orkney is an island of hugely significant archaeological interest and considered to be the centre of ancient Britain. Long before the Egyptians even dreamed about building the pyramids, Neolithic inhabitants built some astonishing sites in the North.
This a fascinating Neolithic burial chambered cairn built around 28000 BC. It is situated 1.5 miles and 2 minutes away from Smiddy Cottage. There is a visitor centre in Stenness Village and a shuttle bus from there to the cairn itself.

Thoroughly recommended and not to be missed.

A great idea as there is so much to look at! Open daily, 10am - 5pm. Open until 7pm on Wednesdays. Exhibitions changing regularly. Situated 2.2 miles from Smiddy Cottage, 4 minutes away.

Kirkwall is 11.9 miles and 17 minutes from Smiddy Cottage. There are lots of places to eat and drink here and it is a lively and culturally rich city. Recommended.

Kirkwall is 11.9 miles and 17 minutes from Smiddy Cottage. There are lots of places to eat and drink here and it is a lively and culturally rich city. Recommended.

Lovely cafe open during the day. Fabulous cakes all hand baked, gluten free and vegan always available too. We go there often and is our favourite cafe.
