Local Food -keep an eye out for roadside stalls too
Our local cafe, called The Old Trout Cafe, has super coffee and cabinet food. Sit down big breakfasts are a must to indulge in. Takeaways include good old fish n chips. Be aware of earlier closing hours in winter.
To the East is the township of Kawerau which offers takeaway kebabs, Indian curries, fish and chips and a supermarket. It is a 15 minute drive from The Red Bach to New World Kawerau. Closes at 7pm in winter.

Whakatane township is a 40 minute drive from The Red Bach. Enjoy fish and chips on the waterfront at Fisherman's Wharf or dine in style using the menu. There are shoals of driftwood here and some important Maori history around the whaka, Mataatua. Out at the beach of Ohope is a favourite left hand headland surf break known as West End. You can learn to surf in summer with Ollie at the surf school, too. Give it a go. Find them at Salt Spray Surf School 021 149 1972.

Waist-deep warm thermal river water in an authentic and undeveloped setting. Said to contain 28 naturally-occurring soft micro-minerals. So relaxing. Very affordable. Open 7am till 9pm. Highly recommended.

Tarawera Falls
Beautiful falls just 800m from the carpark area.
The turn off from SH 30 to Lake Okataina is just 10 minutes west of Lake Rotoma. A narrow road will take you to the Outdoor Education Recreation Trust camp. Follow the short bush walk from here and you will find the Cascades Waterfalls, a most beautiful and mesmerising experience.
