Named the "Eight Wonder of the World". Milford Sound is spectacular and the drive is one of the top 12 things to do in NZ.
I used to work/live on the overnight cruise boat The Mariner.
My recommendation is to go to Milford via a tour - on a small bus.
Milford can be extremely busy and the road also. Fiordland Tours offer an amazing commentary, lunch, afternoon tea and tea/coffee and cookies on the cruise. With only a maximum of 16 people in the bus this is the best way to experience Milford Sound. They pick you up at 8am and bring you back at 5pm. I had Jamie as my guide and he is great!
If you are self driving I would recommend to leave before 7am to be ahead of the 30+ buses that come through every day.
Make sure to stop at Mirror Lakes and notice The Disappearing Mountain.
Sandflies are abundant so be sure to take insect repellent. I recommend Goodbye Sandfly as it is natural and does not contain any of the many harmful chemicals of other brands. You can find this at the local supermarket or pharmacy. We provide a can of insect repellent under the kitchen sink for your use, feel free to use this as needed.

There are less tourists in Doubtful Sound but it is well worth making the extra journey to get there than Milford Sound.
Real Journeys have day and overnight trips.

Doubtful Sound / Patea
Quiet. Amazing views. Manapouri Power Station tour.

Take the 20 minute drive to Frasers Beach at Lake Manapouri. The views are breath taking - you won't be disappointed. Grab a coffee from The Church and walk across the road to the beach. Great spot for a picnic and the lake temperature is a lot warmer than Lake Te Anau so a great place for a dip!
