One of the 9 great walks of New Zealand with good reason! The 32km track will take you across the mountains, with spectacular views, to The Divide which is 37kms from Milford Sound. Alternatively you can link with the Greenstone or Caples tracks which will bring you out on the same side of the mountains as you started, but 31kms down the road on the other side of the lodge. There are 4 huts on the track which must be booked in advance during walking season. For more info read: http://kinlochlodge.co.nz/routeburn.html There are also many day walks as part of the track.

The Greenstone Valley is a wide, open valley with tussock flats and beech forest. The track can be linked with the Caples track (ending where you started) or Routeburn track (ends 31km up the road), or it can be walked one way, starting or finishing either at the Divide or the Greenstone Shelter. The superb diversity of natural features in this area is recognised internationally with the establishment of the Te Wāhipounamu-South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.

A flat, easy day walk (1.5-2hrs) feels like a stroll through an enchanted forest. As you get deeper into the forest of tall red beech trees, let your imagination run wild. The track winds up to pretty Lake Sylvan, home to brown trout and small native fish. You can come back the way you came, or return via the 1920s tramline loop. The loop track takes you through regenerating beech forest and is an Operation Ark site where Department of Conservation staff are working to protect the endangered yellowhead/mōhua.

Mt. Alfred is an amazing day walk affording spectacular 360 degree views of the surroundings. The track is steep, but three quarters of the climb follows a good zig zag track. Above the bushline it gets steeper and is exposed (not recommended for young children).

A fantastic and varied circular route starting 12km from Kinloch. Walk through bush, open farm land, beech forest and join the Greenstone track for the last leg. There is ample opportunity for photography and bird watching. Enjoy the crystal clear waters at Elfin Bay and picturesque Lake Rere (running water), a popular tourist destination in the late 19th century.

A steep climb takes you to the Invincible Gold Mine with great views of the Rees Valley and Mount Earnslaw. Along the track you can see the remains of the water wheel and a unique set of seven berdans - large, revolving cast iron bowls in which the ore was ground. The Gold Extractor is about 5 minutes from the start of the Invincible Gold Mine track. The track was built by miners in the early 1880s.

Even if we didn't own it we'd recommend it! Serving great food is our passion and we take special care to create a regional cuisine that reflects the heritage and environment of Kinloch. Everything is sourced as locally and sustainably as possible; some of it's grown in our own organic veggie garden. We offer award-winning wines and boutique beers, as well as excellent coffee created with the glacial fed waters of our lake passed through UV filters. There's a deck with lake views for the warmer months and a cozy fire for those cooler nights. On the last Friday of the month we often have a jam night involving live music from locals and guests.

Flight-seeing trips by helicopter and fixed wing aircraft to Milford Sound and Mount Cook depart from Glenorchy airport (Milford Sound is just 36 kilometres in a direct line from Glenorchy). The change in scenery over this area is phenomenal and if the weather is fine, it is one of the most spectacular excursions you will ever take. Because there are no landing fees at Glenorchy Airstrip, flight-seeing trips to Milford Sound can be more economical from Glenorchy than from Queenstown. Skydiving is also available.
