Oh boy. When you visit Sarlat, stop by 33 rue de la Republique for a sugar hit. This pastry shop has been in business for decades. Great coffees and teas. Great pastries (called vienoisseries -- croissants and the like), wonderful cakes (try the tarte aux noix if you like walnuts) and some beautiful cakes.

Arts & Culture

This medieval castle has been completely restored to its original state. The wonderful thing is -- there are no guided tours, no audio guides. You buy a ticket and wander wherever you like. The wide staircase was made for horses so the soldiers could ride up to their kitchen inside the castle. Be sure to check out the medieval version of the indoor toilet. Only one small part of the castle is closed off. It's the apartment of the current owner. At the foot of the hill is the town of Beynac, where you can find restaurants, bars and boat tours of the Dordogne River. The steak frites at the restaurant on the corner of the main road and the street leading up to the castle is yummy.

This is a family owned cave on a farm just south of Rouffignac, which is the village to the south of Thenon. The family has built an electric railway that takes you a mile underground to a cavern where you will see Cromagnon cave paintings of mamoths that were painted from life. Kids love place. Not for the claustrophobic.

Josephine Baker was a black American singer and dancer who moved to France to escape racism, in the early 20th century. She became the toast of Paris and eventually, world famous. She bought this chateau as a home for the dozen children of all races and cultures she had adopted. She lived there for many years and provided financial support to the entire village. Sadly, she ran out of money and was eventually evicted from her chateau for failing to pay taxes. Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco rescued her and provided a home for Baker and the children. The house is filled with memorabilia of her career. There is also a wonderful show of birds of prey in the garden.

Sightseeing

Just after World War 2 the French Minister of Culture decided to preserve this medieval city as a living museum. All the buildings are still there on winding pedestrian streets. You can wander the place for hours. There are lots of restaurants and gourmet food shops.

The historic centre of Perigueux has been (mostly) closed to cars. It's a wonderful warren of streets and shops. Rue Limogeanne is worth finding and well worth a wander. There are dozens of shops and restaurants.

Shopping

This is a great little city, the capital of the Dordogne. You will find hundreds of shops in the ancient quarter, near the cathedral (the building with five domes on the roof).
