Shopping

It's just a little traditional Chinese herb shop on the edge of Oakland's Chinatown, but my Occidental (Western) self is always delightfully surprised when I go there. It's really just a "poke your head in the door" place but sometimes you may encounter large batches of Chinese herbs being prepared on the counter top.

Parks & Nature

Walk or jog. Great views of the bay and San Francisco, the east bay hills. Walk along the bay on part of The Bay Trail. Take an extra layer or two - it is likely to be chilly and breezy.

Essentials

My favorite grocery store! Excellent variety. A family-owned full-service grocery. Full service butcher is best around! I'm so very lucky to live 4 blocks away!

Chinese restaurant. Modest prices. Nothing fancy but it is good food and even better BECAUSE IT IS SO CLOSE! Get the Hot & Sour soup, Basil Chicken and Delux Vegetables "to go" and bring it home for a quiet dinner with enough leftover for breakfast the next day.

Great burgers. Modest prices. Lots of free parking in the shopping center. Kind of feels a little bit like Los Angeles to me. A nice, little outdoor covered, heated patio. When you are done take a little walk to the other side of the parking lot to look at the old rock quarry, now filled with water making it a duck pond. What is now the whole shopping center was an important Oakland quarry for many years. The rocks are part of the "ridge of rock " which is the name sake of the Oakland neighborhood of Rock Ridge about 1 mile away.

Great pizza (and salad and burgers, etc). And it's just around the corner! Try the "Greek Goddess" pizza. Yummy! They have sports TV, too.

Everything Else

Not a food place, BioFuel Oasis is a dinky little "gas" station with cool, old (1930s?) architecture. Except they don't sell "gas" but locally made plant-based biofuel/diesel, chicken feed, bales of hay, honey supplies, and other cool DIY urban farm stuff. A life-saver for us city farmers. A nice place to find little gifts to bring home and to be inspired.

Drinks & Nightlife

A few steps away, this is the corner bar re-imagined. A new, cool, faux-hunting-lodge interior (and exterior) it is a full bar with lots of locally made offerings. A tiny kitchen offers regional bar food. If you are lucky enough to get a window seat you can watch the world go by. They have a fireplace too for rainy days and chilly nights. And a back patio for warm evenings and large groups.
