Amazing 365 degree views of Mt Taranaki, New Plymouth, Port Taranaki, Sugarloaf Islands and beyond. Reasonable fitness is required - approximately 200+ steps with a short chain-link climb at the top. My 4 year old niece and 60 year old parents managed it, however please do not attempt if you have a any injuries or severe fear of heights.

Visible at all times, only accessible at low tide at the northern end of Back Beach next to the giant sand dune. Steep islands that are not really conducive to exploring other than around the base. Amazing displays of swarming bird-life at dusk as they all return home to roost for the night. Home to local seal colonies, do not approach seals under any circumstances. Glorious sunsets, best viewed from above at several picnic areas along Centennial Drive.

12km trail that follows the river, from the foreshore coastal walkway to Bell block. Go as far or as short asyou please. Cycle, walk or run through farmland and trees and forget that you are in the centre of the city. Exits to various suburbs along the way as well as to Te Henui Cemetery.

Soft black sand beach, good surf - multiple breaks, amazing clear water in summer. Northern end leads to giant sand dune & Sugarloaf Islands, teeming with bird-life at dusk and home to seasonal seal colonies - do not approach. Sand gets very hot in midday sun, wear appropriate footwear. Do not sit near cliff-face as it is unstable. Can be rocky with small, smooth, riverstone-like rocks depending on recent tides dumping or removing sand. At times there are low-tide pools to sit in, fantastic for kids. Flat and tranquil Herekawe walkway starts at the bottom carpark. Large rocks at Southern end with fascinating moss, seaweeds, rockpools, miniature mussels etc. Best sunsets in the region
