Food Scene

Everytime I go to Darios (vegetarian, Italian) I love the open air seating (its beautiful in the evenings) and eat my favourite Aranciazola salad and Stromboli pizza (spicy pizza sauce). This is one of the best restaurants in Pune.

Opposite Darios is lesser-known, newly-opened health food restaurant Sante, which is another favourite. The baked yogurt is the best dessert. Try the sprout risotto made from local grains, the hummus or the mushroom-broccoli strifry.

Hands down the best price and quality for ordering in Chinese food: my favourite is the crispy spinach. Quick deliveries.

This is our favourite neighbourhood pub for beers, great fish and chicken starters and the most important SPUDs! Delicious baked potatoes like nowhere else in Pune. Plus the owner, Aman is so friendly and helpful. Let him order for you.

The Original Pune

If you decide to wander away from KP to the cultural heart of Original Pune—you will need to visit the multiple ‘peths’ or areas, which are names after the various days of the week. Budhwar Peth is the infamous red light area of Pune. I visited it once as part of my writer’s workshop and wrote a short story titled, Wednesday Warriors. The more famous is Shaniwar (Friday) Peth, home to the Colonial Fort Shaniwar Wada—this is the heart of Original Pune. The streets in and around these areas are more like skinny lanes best navigated on a motorbike. Suppose you start your morning with a visit to the Fort, you can go for breakfast to Le Plaisir—one the best cafes in this area. I love the salads, the pumpkin gnocchi and the panacotta—yum yum! There is the river walk, the museum and several interesting structures in and around the Peths. If you find yourself ready for dinner there are two places of Maharashtrin thaali that I often take my guests: Dakkhan (near Law College road)—a boutique, quaint high quality restaurant that serves delicious chicken and mutton thaalis. Or you can enjoy a vegetarian unlimited thaali at the legendary Durvankur.
This is one of the old, iconic forts set up by legendary local kings from way way back. Take a quick looksie and then step out for a local meal to Durvankar.

Shopping

Camp offers Pune's common market--a mixture of branded stories, local stores and street vendors. Just jump in a riksha and start negotiating hard when you like something. There are of course many malls that you can shop at too.

The Lanes of KP Koregaon Park is a never-ending offering of cafes, restobars, salons and stores. You can only have fun in between Lanes 5-7.
