Go and play on the stepping stones. See if you can build a dam. Take the dog, they love the little quiet beach there and having a paddle by the cliff.

Have a walk around the village and explore the little nooks and crannies. See if you can find the narrowest street in England. Stand outside Captain Cook's cottage and imagine how he grew to love the sea whilst he was a boy here. Discover new routes to and from First and Last. Go and look in the Art Gallery and the Museum. Buy a treat from Betsy and Bo. Find the amazing viewpoint that overlooks the harbour.

Go down to the beach and see if you can build the biggest sandcastle in the world. Steer clear of the cliffs as rocks do fall and it can be dangerous. Walk along the breakwater when the sea is calm or the tide is out and look back at the most beautiful village in the world. Go rock-pooling and see what sea creature you find. Paddle in the sea or fish for crabs off the jetty. The beach is dog friendly too so take your doggos down for a swim.

Another beach - this one is long, sandy and great for running around on. You can play a great game of beach cricket here. There aren't a lot of places to buy food or drinks in Runswick so we recommend you take a picnic. Be prepared to hold your breath as your car goes over the crest of the steep hill down into the bay.

This beach is beautiful, flat, sandy, deserted most of the time and fab for doggos to run on. Drive through Loftus and turn right into the village of Skinningrove then head for the sea. Park up and walk on the path to the left, through the ruins of a bridge and there it is a hidden gem.

This is the steam railway that was in Heartbeat. It's a lovely day out. Take a picnic and get on the train for a trip into the past. Lots of fun.

This is Aidensfield where they filmed Heartbeat. Definitely worth a visit to see the old Ford Anglia Police Car, the Aidensfield Arms, the garage and the stores.

Whitby is an absolute must. Visit the beautiful gothic town with it's nicky knacky shops, it's ruined abbey and the 199 steps it takes to climb up to it. See the river where the whaling fleet was based. Stand by the whalebone arch and imagine Bram Stoker looking down at the beach and developing the idea that eventually became Dracula. It's really lovely.

The abbey is really atmospheric in the twilight and evenings if you can get to one of the special events they hold. We saw one where they re-enacted Dracula. It was great.

York is a bit of a drive but it's a really beautiful and historic place to visit. Book into Jorvic, the Viking settlement which is under a shopping centre. The Minster is stunning and the shops are great.

They have two big water slides plus a decent pool. It's a fair drive but our kids always loved it.
