City/town information

A traditional market town of historic buildings, cobbled yards, quaint corners, and interesting shops, ideally located in the beautiful Upper Eden Valley, formerly the old county of Westmorland, now Cumbria. This is an area of Cumbria much less well known than the Lake District but equally as appealing. It is surrounded by a landscape of pastoral rural scenery and wild uplands and offers breath-taking views in every direction. The weekly market is held in the Market Square every Monday including Bank Holidays

Still hosts a farmers’ market and is held on the morning of the third Saturday of every month, in the Memorial Hall in Brough. It is almost unique among farmers’ markets in that it is entirely under cover and thus protected from the weather, though there may be extra stalls outside, including the local vegetable seller who prefers to be outside!

The town is an ideal centre for tourists of all types and is the starting point for many walks over the surrounding fell countryside. It has kept its old-world charm and the people of Appleby are amongst the friendliest you can find. With Castle and Keep at the Brow of the Main Street and the town as its foot, it seems as if time has stood still. A walk up Borough gate can transport you back into Medieval England while the charm of the riverside walks provide and opportunity to experience the tranquillity of the countryside within five minutes of the town centre.

Cycling in Eden

Riding a bike over rolling terrain on quiet rural roads and bridleway tracks is an exhilarating way to enjoy Eden's epic scenery. The Eden Valley and Orton Fells, spread as they are the tougher terrain of the Lake District and North Pennines, are especially good for circular rides from places like Penrith, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen market towns, which are all accessible by train too. Higher altitude Alston otters adventurou outings for the more experienced cyclist. The recently launched Lakes and Dales Loop allows you to get up close to Cumbria’s spectacular landscapes.

Walking in Eden

Eden in Cumbria - The Lake District is a paradise for walkers. As well as Lake District walking. Eden also offers the limestone landscape or the Orton Fells, the beautiful River Eden, countryside and attractive villages of the Eden Valley, and part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Alfred Wainwright's guides feature numerous fells around Ullswater (arguably England's most beautiful lake and Haweswater. The northern fringe of the Howgill Fells as far as the Yorkshire Dales National Park is an area for quiet walking.
