Palaia Chora, the "Mystras of Aegina"

Sightseeing

Palaia Chora, is a middle-ages village, built during 9th century and it remained the capital city of Aegina until 1826. People of Aegina built the city up on that hill to protect themselves from Saracen Pirates. On that same hill, archaeologists and historians argue that "Οίη" was built, the ancient Greek city mentioned by Herodotus and Pausanias. There used to be 366 churches in total, one for each day of the year. Today, only 38 are preserved. A few of them are in good condition and worth paying a visit for their history and the wall paintings that survive to this day. It's very close to Saint Nektarios Monastery and visiting is easy; there are paths linking all the chapels.
