A group of 18th century pirates used the island as a meeting place, and cursed anyone who came looking for them there. But the curses can't keep locals away from this gorgeous spot! According to some, you may sight a ghost, or even hear whispering spirits while on the island. But as long as you're there to enjoy the view and not to treasure hunt, they should leave you alone! Legend has it that Captain Kidd buried some of his treasure here in 1699. But with 14 acres of possible hiding spots, who knows if it will ever be found. Especially since anyone who goes looking for it will be cursed. The Paugussett Indians also cursed the island after losing it to the Europeans, damning anyone who dared to settle it. You'll never forget a trip to Charles Island! Walking the sandbar will make you feel like you're walking on water as you find yourself standing in the middle of the ocean. Talk about an unforgettable experience! Now a nature preserve, take a walk around the island and enjoy the lush wildlife. Or bring your fishing pole for a chance to snag a nice bluefish. You will love this place!

The breathtakingly beautiful oceanfront church is just around the corner from our home. "The first chapel of Saint Gabriel’s was destroyed by a fire on Sunday, February 23, 1923. The present church was constructed, and dedicated on August 26, 1923. The church’s unique architecture reflects the influence of a Spanish Mission chapel. The interior was completed and the church was rededicated on August 3, 1930 by Father John Anderson. The beautiful stained glass windows depicts the life of Jesus Christ from birth to His ascension into heaven. The window above the altar shows Angel Gabriel appearing to Mary."

The Milford "Green" Welcome to Milford, "A Small City with a Big Heart!". The sixth oldest town in Connecticut, 50,000 residents are proud to boast of a meticulously maintained "town green", the second longest in New England. Multiple memorials in honor of those who have served in past conflicts parade down the grassway. A memorial bridge provides a stone passageway of history of our ancestors. A feeling of "Milford Pride", along with ample cultural, recreational, educational and employment opportunities make the City more than just a great place to visit. Many high quality arts and crafts shows, varied festivals and events make Milford a destination for daytrippers. Strolling through downtown you get that small town feeling coupled with the charm and the sense of history of an English settlement dating from 1639. Walk over the Hotchkiss Bridge, gaze at the gorge framed by the arch of the Memorial Bridge, stop for an ice cream cone, and rent a bike and tour, then return to have a lobster dinner.

Just off the Connecticut coast on the border of Milford and Stratford lies the Charles E. Wheeler Wildlife Area. This area consists of a tidal marsh feeding from the Housatonic River and the nearby Long Island Sound. If you’re into birdwatching then this place is for you. Everything from the smallest bird to the largest swan can be found among the grass. Most of the time you wouldn’t see them until you turn a corner and they’ll fly out of their hidden nests scaring you half to death as they take flight. It’s not surprising that a wildlife area has a lot of wildlife, but I do want to really stress here that you’ll see a ton of everything. In a 3-hour period I likely saw upwards of 10 types of birds, 50 turtles, and 50,000+ crabs. Everywhere you turn your head you will see some new animal or creature living its life in the marsh. The timing of arrival is extremely important, as this marsh is only accessible 2 hours before and 2 hours after high tide.

History/Museum

Milford History February 1, 1639, is the date the area then known as "Wepawaug" was purchased from Ansantawae, chief sachem of the Paugusset Tribe. Settlers began arriving shortly thereafter and began to build the town known as Milford. Townspeople played a part in the development of the United States. Adventurers from Milford reached out and founded several other communities and explored afar. Buried treasure is said to exist on a small island the Indians called "Poquahaug", just a mile off Silver Sands Beach. It is a recognized fact that Captain Kidd and other pirates sailed and hid along the Connecticut coast. It’s no wonder that iron chests filled with "loot" are rumored to be buried on the land called Charles Island! Three governors of Connecticut called Milford their home. Fort Trumbull was built to provide protection in the late 1700s during the Revolutionary War. Yes, George Washington dined and rested here! During the Civil War, Milford was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Although primarily agrarian, shipbuilding, oystering, small industry and trade on the open seas from the harbor were part of the local economy. The early 1900's brought the leather industry along with the making of boots, hats and shoes. Milford was also famous for carriages, which were sold throughout the centuries. After World War II, the population swelled as GIs returned from the war and bought houses in the suburb of New Haven and Bridgeport called Milford. Industry also developed to support the war effort. Norden, Milford Rivet, U.S. Motors, and Edgecomb Steel were some of the familiar names of the time. Other industry followed most notably the consumer giants of Bic and Schick. Then the completion of I-95 in 1960, with its seven exits and entrances brought easy access. The Connecticut Post Shopping Center and other development followed rapidly. Development reached a peak in the 70s and 80s, leveled off in the early 90s and then picked up again in the late 90s until we reached our present population of over 52,000 and businesses that number over 2,000. The Milford Historical Society safeguards three 18th century homes at its Wharf Lane Complex. Among their possessions is one of the finest collections of Native American artifacts.

Hot oil Pizza is the bomb! Now they are all over the east coast and quality never waivered. This is a Locals Favorite! Not only are they known for unique pizza but they honor service members of all kinds by covering their walls with photos and memorabilia donated by local families. In 1935, a post-Prohibition tavern named Colony Grill opened in an Irish neighborhood in Stamford, Connecticut. Since then, the "Colony" has become famous for what is now its only menu offering: a one-of-a-kind, thin-crust pizza, with or without hot oil -- served simply, amid classic charm.

2 Roads isn’t just the logo, it’s a philosophy. Life always seems to offer up two ways to go. It just so happens, we prefer the one less traveled and having some fun along the way – in our lives, our careers & especially for our beers! Now our “road less traveled” philosophy is being brought to life in the beers that we create and how we create them.

In 2021, the Torres family purchased the business and after a 9 month renovation, reopened as Park City Music Hall on November 20, 2021. Since then, we have hosted countless nationally touring bands, grammy winners, living legends, and electrifying up-and-comers. The Bijou Theatre has a long and colorful history dating back to 1909. Silent films were growing in popularity and Lillian Ashmun commissioned architect Ernest G. Southey to design a movie house with a two-story ballroom above. It was common for the Bijou to offer three or four Vaudeville shows every day. The price per ticket back then? 5 cents for matinees, 10 cents for evening shows! Aside from movies, the Bijou Theatre was alive with music and dance. Peter Dawe bought the building and Daniel J. Quilty, a master dance instructor, operated his College of Dancing, bringing waltz, polka, tap and ballet lessons to the city of Bridgeport until 1950. Trends come and go, and in the second half of the 1900s the Bijou Theatre underwent different identities and was renamed The Rivoli, Downtown Cinema and then Downtown Family Cinema. One hundred years after showing its first movie, the Bijou Theatre regained its original name. Our goal now is to retain the spirit that comes with it.
