For the BEST night's sleep, after dinner, have a shower (you must shower before getting into the bore baths), put on your bathers under a tracksuit then drive to the wonderful, health-promoting Artesian Mineral hot baths. You will soak away the aches and pains of a busy day, enjoy a chat to the locals and hear about amazing healings credited to the bore baths.

Witness history in the making. Visit the Australian Opal Centre in Morilla Street before it transfers to its new amazing building in the Opal Fields - Red Car Door. Ask the Volunteers there about the Opalised Yabbie Buttons - and find out what they are. See opalised fossils, our own local Megasaur - ask to see Harold Hodge's Opal Teeth!! Then at night you might like to see the AOC Black Opal Heritage Shed and see the movie under the stars. Make sure you see if the construction has started in the big excavated hole that will be home to the amazing new Australian Opal and Fossil centre.

To see this area, I highly recommend you take a tour with Black Opal Tours. We went there a couple of times by ourselves but it was nothing compared to the day we had in one of their full day tours. You see everything and more. You get the stories - and it's nothing without the stories.

Neighbourhoods

Lightning Ridge is famous for its stunning black opal - you wont buy it cheaper anywhere else as you'll be cutting out the many middle men. It is also home to a huge variety and number of artists - John Murray and Viki Murray included. To see any work of the many Aboriginal Artists you need to have a contact - and you could start with Tom Barker from the Goondee - Aboriginal Keeping Place - Museum 94 Pandora St - phone first to make an appointment to visit. Tom and his cousin Darryl make original, genuine artefacts - different sized boomerangs, clapsticks, bullroarers and amazing digeridoos. And they know all the artists in the area. The Car Door Tours are a "must do" for visitors to Lightning Ridge - they are free and take you round 4 areas of the Ridge so you get a good flavour of life out here - buy a map from the Visitor Information Centre (V.I.C.) for the princely sum of $1. Car door routes were originally created to help emergency services find places on the opal fields - there are no gazetted road names so someone will say - "Oh I'm just past Red Car Door No 5" We only have one supermarket in town BUT do yourself a favour and go to the local community garden and buy fresh produce there - it's on the left cnr of Opal St & Harlequin St - just past the police station. You'll have to get there before 9am to catch Nick though - he's an early bird. The Sunday markets are on Sunday mornings from Easter til it starts to get too hot, so pop down for a visit next to the V.I.C. There are lots more places to see in the Ridge than I've listed so make sure you get more info from the V.I.C. We have visitors for 8-9 months of the year because of our fabulous autumn and spring weather and our mild winters. It gets cold when the sun goes down so you'll need your winter woollies and warm PJ's for the nights. To get the best night's sleep though, after dinner, have a shower, get into your bathers with warm clothes over and drive down to the Bore Baths - end of Pandora Street. Have a soak, chat to the locals and other visitors and go home for the BEST night's sleep. The Ridge does not have a vibrant night life so people wanting a bit of action can go to the Bowling Club for a meal - and they sometimes have entertainment on. But after a busy day of sight-seeing you'll probably just want to get your relaxation at home @ 68 Opal St. If you do want to eat out though, the food in Piccolo and Bruno's Italian Restaurants are top class and we have a number of great cafe's for more options.

You'll need a car to get around

Some of the car door tours have some pretty rough tracks so maybe don't bring your tiny car

fresh produce from the community garden

This is the freshest and cheapest produce you can find here so I heartily recommend you go check it out - say Hi to Nick from me (Gini)

book restaurants before heading out

Give as much notice as you can because they book out quickly during tourist season - especially Piccolo (02) 6829 0103 and Bruno's (02) 6829 4157 - or of course you can get take-away food
