Located in the heart of Xochimilco, this is a traditional pulquería that has been around for over 4 generations. The special thing about this place is that they have taken pulque to a new level by creating unique flavors like cempasúchil (marigold flower) and mint, to name a couple. I recommend visiting this place during the day only.

One of the most iconic places in Mexico City when it comes to nightclubs (if you can properly call it that?). Patrick Miller is an old storage facility that was converted into a dance bar in the 80's. If you're ok with being in big crowds, this place is a must-do when in the city on a Friday night. Envision Hi-NRG music pumping out loudly, while lazer lights flash back and forth across the rooms while big circles of dance-offs perform. Dress code? Anything goes! And you'll literally be in for a surprise when you see some of the "interesting attires" showcased. Type of crowd? All walks of life enter this place. Do not expect anything fancy. Get ready to sweat your butt off, but you can refresh yourself from time to time by hiding out along the sidelines of the main dance area with a beer, which is the only alcohol served in this joint.

Markets

For those seasoned travelers/adventure junkies: If you want to explore a market that will blow all of your senses away, the Merced is the place to visit. As the second biggest wholesale market in the city, it's a huge place that sells everything from food to clothes to household items just to name a few. It also has an extensive range of food vendors, where, in my opinion, some of the best tacos in the city, can be found. You can get there either by Uber or by metro, but please note, it isn't the safest side of the city and is located right in the middle of a red-light district. Highly recommended that you visit without any valuables and do not wear any flashy clothes or jewelry.

Highly recommended that you visit without any valuables and do not wear any flashy clothes or jewelry.
A very special market located right in the centre of the city. Here, you'll be able to try insects, exotic meats, fresh seafood, and much more! Make sure to have a seat at one of the local "Tapas" stands where they'll serve you a small glass of wine when you order a cheese or cured meats platter.

This is my favorite market for arts & crafts/souvenirs. Give yourself at least 2 hours to walk around. I love the variety and colorfulness of this place. You'll literally want to buy everything! Remember that you can always slightly negotiate the price (particularly if you're buying more than one item of something), but please don't try to bargain the prices down too much as a lot of hard work goes into most of what's sold in this market.

One of my favorite markets in the city, the Jamaica market is known as the "flower market" of Mexico City, but also sells everything else that any normal market does. It has a delicious fonda section too. The most famous food item to try at this market is the HUARACHE, a large, oblong corn-dough patty (huarache refers to a traditional oblong-shaped sandal), stuffed with re-fried beans, topped with onion, cilantro, and other ingredients to choose from like avocado or meats. The market is open 24 hours, but it's recommended to go during the day as the surrounding area is off the beaten path and not the safest. **For the ultra adventurous ones, a few blocks away is a very traditional Pulquería named La Bella Carolina. The staff is super friendly and they have a variety of pulque flavors to choose from, but note that you will almost likely be the only tourist in there :)

Neighborhoods

A charming neighborhood located south of the city, Coyoacán feels more like its own small colonial town, with tree-lined, cobble-stoned streets surrounded by lots of interesting cafés and restaurants. The area has a relaxed, bohemian feel to it that will make you want to spend an entire day there. --Frida Kahlo museum - Casa Azul --Coyoacán Market (food and souvenirs) My favorite thing are the famous tostada stands. There are plenty to choose from. Try a seafood tostada, you won't regret it! --Parroquia San Juan Bautista and surrounding plaza. --Bars, cafés and restaurants --Viveros de Coyoacán

This bustling neighborhood is a nice mix between residential and business (during the day). Famous for its nighttime taquerías, it's a nice blend of "traditional" with "up-and-coming". With many fondas, restaurants, bars, and cafés to explore, if you're a foodie and don't mind stepping out of the touristy areas, you should check this hood out. Highlights: El Vilsito, Taquería La Costilla, Tacos Tony, Piloncillo y Cascabel, Beer Bros, Hop: The Beer Experience 2, Cantina Los Cuates, Mercado 24 de Agosto.

Coffee shops

Great coffee, a nice place to have a seat and people-watch for a bit. The staff, from my experience, are not always the friendliest, but if you like a good coffee, it's worth checking out.

Have not actually been myself, but keep hearing from many that they have excellent coffee, so thought I'd add it to the list. Will definitely be checking it out for myself shortly!

A small, delightful little place to stop and have a tasty coffee. In the heart of Condesa, another great spot to sit back and people-watch.
