At first blush, agriculture and literature might seem to be an incongruous pair, but not in Salinas. As the county seat of Monterey, it is a vibrant agribusiness hub and is most famous for being the ancestral home of Nobel Prize Laureate John Steinback and the nationally renowned National Stenback Center Museum. Noshing on locally grown delicacies, such as artichokes, at Th Steinback house - the boyhood home of Mr. Steinbeck and now a favorite eatery is a must. Plan ahead to attend one of the many Salinas festivals or events such as the California Rodeo Salinas or the California International Airshow. Traveling by train? Salinas is home to Monterey COunty's only Amtrak station.

Pacific Grove, California has a classic Main Street, USA feel. With one of the oldest continually operating lighthouses in the country and a classic 1932 golf course partially designed by Jack Neville, Pacific Grove holds many old-fashioned charms. Its beaches, located right on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Asilomar State Beach and Lovers Point Beach are perfect spots for kayaking or surfing — and some of the fish you see on the Bay may turn up in your sustainable seafood dinner that night. If you're fortunate enough to be in Pacific Grove during the fall or winter, you can catch the annual migration of tens of thousands of Monarch butterflies who take up residence in the pines and eucalyptus trees of the Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary.

According to local legend, this park was originally called "Lovers of Jesus Point," back in the era when Pacific Grove was a Methodist retreat camp. Since the late 1800s, the beach at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove has been a popular spot for boating and swimming, and over recent decades surfers have joined the mix. Lovers Point Park has above all become Pacific Grove's best-loved spot for picnics, Plein air painting, and scenic photography. Perched in the remote Gavilan Mountain Range, 1,800 feet above California’s Salinas Valley, this rugged vineyard sits at the base of an extinct volcano bordering the Pinnacles National Park. Chalone Vineyard is one of the few wineries in the U.S. growing grapes in limestone-based soils, the same as in Burgundy. The spare, well-drained ground, limited rainfall and low crop levels attracted Dick Graff, who wanted to make top-flight Burgundian-styled Chardonnay. Graff made his first vintage under the Chalone Vineyard label in 1966, producing what became a benchmark for California Chardonnay.
