Falling Spring Falls is a breathtaking 80-foot waterfall that is one of the most visited and photographed spots in the Alleghany Highlands. The waterfall is on Route 220, just 5 miles north of Covington. About an hour south of cottage. Just an overlook point, no hiking allowed.

Home of the Big Bend Campground, this particular river curve that winds through Smoke Hole Canyon in the Monongahela National Forest is the perfect spot for some family friendly summer swimming... and some epic, bucket-list worthy primitive tubing. The entire river loop is nearly a mile long, and can take up to an hour to float ... but the hike at the neck of the bend is only a few hundred yards, meaning you can do laps and laps of floating around the Big Bend peninsula with very minimal effort. Must drive everywhere, but every drive is a beautiful one!

Take a map. GPS directions can be incorrect and there is limited cell signal. The cottage is on a main road, so it is easy to get around and see all Highland County and Monterey have to offer.

There are no grocery stores in Monterey. However, the Highland Roots Market sells local produce, meat and eggs along with organic/vegan options! Other staples can be found at The Curly Maple, Dollar General (carries fruit and veg), Family Dollar and Jackson River Deli. Plus, you could eat out. The nearest grocery store is about 20 mins north in Franklin, WV @ 32 PIKE ROAD FRANKLIN, WV.

To further “tap” into what Highland County is most known for, you can visit the Virginia Maple Syrup Trail! This passport program offers visitors the chance to visit seven sugar camps in Highland County throughout the year. Amish bakery and deli located 1.5 miles south of Monterey @ 1812 Jackson River Road. Open for food and some groceries Monday - Saturday 8:00 - 5:00. Fresh baked goods only available Friday and Saturday. Awesome bread, donuts, and pies. Also, can order sandwiches. Don't miss the Maple donuts on the weekends!

Farmer's markets (Seasonal)

Highland County - Friday afternoons, 3:30 to 6:00 pm, June through mid-October at the Highland Center on Spruce Street in Monterey. Pendleton County - Saturday 9:00 - 12:00 at the Tresure Mountain Building in Franklin, WV. Follow signs in town. Bath County - Saturday mornings, 9am-1:00pm, June through September 22nd. Located in the downtown parking lot in Hot Springs, Va.
