Plunge into Alberta’s crown jewel, Banff National Park, a mainstay entry in all published lists of Top Places to Visit in the World. The park offers its guests activities galore and a feast for one’s senses. Scuba dive, snow shoe, canoe, watch wildlife or just revel in nature’s beauty! Banff National Park has a subarctic climate with three eco-regions, including montane, sub-alpine, and alpine. The forests are dominated by Lodgepole pine at lower elevations and Engelmann spruce in higher ones below the treeline, above which is primarily rocks and ice. Mammal species such as the grizzly, cougar, wolverine, elk, bighorn sheep and moose are found, along with hundreds of bird species. Reptiles and amphibians are also found but only a limited number of species have been recorded. The mountains are formed from sedimentary rocks which were pushed east and over newer rock strata between 80 and 55 million years ago. Over the past few million years, glaciers have at times covered most of the park, but today are found only on the mountain slopes though they include the Columbia Icefield. Erosion from water and ice have carved the mountains into their current shapes. Banff is 1.5 hours away from our place via Stoney Trail West (AB-201 West) passing through the scenic Kananaskis Country.

Sightseeing

Gasp at the bird’s eye view of Calgary at the Calgary Tower. It is a 191-metre (627 ft.) free standing observation tower in Downtown Calgary, a short 25-minute car drive north (via AB-2) from our place. Originally called the Husky Tower, it was conceived as a joint venture between Marathon Realty Company Limited and Husky Oil as part of an urban renewal plan and to celebrate Canada's centennial of 1967. The Calgary tower features a revolving restaurant, Sky 360, that rotates so as to give customers a scenic view of downtown Calgary. The restaurant does a complete rotation at noon. The base of the tower is connected through the +15 skyway network to One Palliser Square, Fairmont Palliser Hotel, and EnCana Place. Stairs (802 total steps) to the observation deck are not opened to the public but have been used on occasions for publicity, as well as for an annual charity stair-climbing race.
