Street food in Kadikoy

We can do a street food tour in Kadıköy. You can find my list of favorite street foods below.
A TRADITION OF BAGEL IN KADIKÖY “TARİHİ YELDEĞİRMENİ SİMİT FIRINI” Tarihi Yeldeğirmeni Simit Fırını is the best bagel shop on the Anatolian side. The bagel shop has been run on Karakolhane Street in Kadıköy’s historical neighbourhood, Yeldeğirmeni, since 1970. Tarihi Yeldeğirmeni Simit Fırını is one of the special bagel shops, baking its bagels in an old brick oven. If you are on your way to Yeldeğirmeni, you should get in the queue formed in the early morning hours and taste bagels baked in the brick oven. The distinctive quality of Tarihi Yeldeğirmeni Simit Fırını is that just only bagels are baked in this bakeshop.

Kadıköy Midyecisi (Kadikoy Mussels Restaurant) is my favorite mussel shop in Kadıköy with the innovation it brings to stuffed mussels with its counter. The adventures of Tekin and Doğan brothers, which started at the mussel counter in 1989, continue today in their shops in Kadıköy. There are spicy, hot, sauced and classic mussels. I especially like the mussels with pot sauce.

Mercan Kokoreç is a popular place for shabby street tastes and one of the first. Everyone living in Kadıköy has passed by and eaten either mussels or kokoreçini. Mercan Kokoreç is one of the most frequent destinations for entertainment, matches and concerts. It first made a name for itself with its kokorec and mussel pan, and now it attracts attention with its hot and large stuffed mussels.

Where to visit in Kadikoy

A building with a strange and interesting history, Süreyya Operasi was designed and built by the politician Süreyya İlmen Pasha, and opened in 1927 as the first musical theatre on the Asian side of Istanbul. The place operated as a cinema until it was restored and reopened as an opera house 80 years later, in 2007. The building is worthy of a visit for both architectural and cultural reasons: its beautiful art deco foyer was inspired by the Champs-Elysées Theatre in Paris, and the interior has a striking German influence. I recommend you to buy tickets for the concert in advance. You can buy Sureyya opera tickets online from the link below. http://www.sureyyaoperasi.kadikoy.bel.tr/en/

An open-air tea garden looking out on the Sea of Marmara to the west of the Bosphorus, Moda Çay Bahçesi is simply one of the loveliest places in the neighbourhood and the city to relax. Bring pastries or bagels bought from the nearby street sellers, take a seat and have tea or Turkish coffee. To experience this place at its very best, try to time a visit to coincide with the sun setting over the sea. My personal choice is "Kemal'in Yeri"

Müze Gazhane (Gasworks Museum) As the name suggests, the complex is located in an Ottoman-era gasworks, in the Hasanpaşa neighbourhood in Kadıköy. Dating back to 1891, the Hasanpaşa Gazhanesi used to provide energy to the entire Asian side of the city. Istanbul Municipality took into listing the complex as a heritage site and then reconverted it as a public space for arts and culture.

Information about Kadikoy

Kadikoy is a large district of the Asian side where life is good and smooth. This is rather a secular middle class area and although it is far from the touristic areas. Until recently, the neighbourhood of Kadıköy-Moda, on the Asian side of Istanbul at the southern end of the Bosphorus, was an unremarkable, mostly residential place that barely registered on the city’s cultural map. Over the past few years, however, it has become an unlikely hotspot for cutting-edge bars, art and culture hubs, cafes and music venues, as well as a haven for plugged-in, liberal-minded people opposed to Turkey’s increasingly authoritarian political climate. Kadikoy is one of the best choice with many bars, welcoming artistic and rock & roll atmosphere. There are great pubs in the streets of Kadikoy. In my personal opinion, Kadikoy is not the top choice for feasts of meze and raki that are a cornerstone of Turkish culture.

Local food restaurant in Kadikoy

Manti, dumplings with spiced ground meat and onion, is one of the all time favorite dishes in Turkey. The marriage of the dumplings with garlic yoghurt sauce and spice infused olive oil is simply irresistible. Red pepper and dried mint infused in olive oil all add deliciousness. Once upon a time, Sayla Mantı was the go-to place for any celebrity that desired mantı. While they do have “Çiğ Börek” and a couple of other dishes, but the mantı steals the show from production at 10 am to the last call. The best part? If you’re having guests over and you can’t be bothered to cook, Sayla has got you covered: you can buy the dumplings by the kilo and boil it when you get home! Don’t forget to throw some flour on yourself and tell your guests how long you’ve been slaving away in the kitchen.

In the district’s affluent, picturesque borough of Yeldegirmeni, where rents get higher as one approaches the Marmara Sea coast, these new establishments are rapidly altering the classic character of the neighborhood, as espresso bars replace local shops. One of the most relaxing hangout places in the Yeldegirmeni, the pedestrian Karakolhana Caddesi running through the heart of Yeldegirmeni. Akoguz is the right address for those looking for the traditional Turkish food on the Yeldeğirmeni. You can eat 3 course meal less than 5 USD. Turkish cuisine incorporates a huge range of vegetable dishes known as zeytinyagli yemegi -- foods cooked in olive oil. The majority are vegetable-based and include green beans, artichokes and of course, eggplants. When you come to Kadıköy, do not leave without eating. The location is very close to the famous Kadıköy fishermen's market. In addition to your Inegol Meatballs and Kashar Meatballs preferences, I recommend you to order the special yoghurt unique to the menu of Ekspres Inegol Meatballs only. Piyaz is also a must.
