Sightseeing

The full expanse of the Landscape of Grand Pré can be best appreciated from the View Park on Old Post Road. The dykelands, fields, and settlement on the hills, first established by the Acadians in the 1680s, have been maintained and expanded over centuries by farmers of New England Planter descent, and later immigrants - including English and Scottish who came in the 19th and 20th centuries and Dutch who arrived after the Second World War. The view of the 1111-hectare (2745 acres) of dykelands within the World Heritage Site is framed by the dramatic Cape Blomidon, from which tradition holds, the legendary Mi’kmaw figure Kluscap (Glooscap) kept a watchful eye over his people.

Visitors to the site will uncover the tale of Le Grand Dérangement: a tragic event in Acadian history that has shaped the vibrant culture of modern-day Acadians across the globe through its quiet but powerful renaissance. The site commemorates the Grand Pré area as a centre of Acadian settlement from 1682 to 1755 and the Deportation of the Acadians, which began in 1755 and continued until 1762. For many Acadians throughout the world, the site remains the heart of their ancestral homeland and the symbol of the ties that unite them to this day. https://www.novascotia.com/see-do/attractions/grand-pre-national-historic-site/1335

This area was first known as Nme’juaqnek – place of bountiful fish. The Mi’kmaq traditionally came here to gather and fish. In the 1600s and 1700s, it was the centre of early European colonization and settlement. Today, the fort is situated on 15 hectares (37 acres) of land in Annapolis Royal and is what remains of a long line of forts first erected by the Scots, then subsequently built by the French and lastly taken over and re-built by the British to become what we now know as Fort Anne National Historic Site.

This is just one of the Wineries you can visit in the Annapolis Valley. Nova Scotia has a long and rich tradition of growing grapes for wine that dates back to the 1600s, when this was one of the first areas to cultivate grapes in North America. The climate and soil conditions in Nova Scotia favour unique and distinctive grape varietals. Taste L’Acadie Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Lucie Kuhlmann, New York Muscat, and Baco Noir on a patio overlooking a vineyard.

One of the largest wineries, and I personally prefer the smaller vineyards because Luckett's attracts loads of tourists and tour buses. However, it has great views and nice outdoor eating area.
