Hailed as probably the oldest hostelry in Salisbury, dating back 700 years and certainly the most haunted! The huge oak beams pre-date the building by several hundred years and are thought to come from early sailing vessels. This is a must see and recommended by the Good Pub Guide for 28 years. Listed as one of the 25 Pubs in the UK you must drink in before you die! Go in - if you dare!

Avebury Stone Circles and the surrounding ancient landscape are well worth a visit whilst you are in the area. Hailed as one of the largest and most complex of the UK's Neolithic henge monuments. The outer circle, consisting of around 100 stones is reportedly the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world with 2 smaller circles contained within it and you can access and explore the henge and stone circles on foot. A visit to The Alexander Keiller Museum onsite is recommended to understand the historical shaping and importance of the Avebury landscape and locations of other points of historical interest here. 16th century Avebury Manor House can also be found here with displays representing life throughout the centuries. This is a National Trust site and dog friendly. See their website for further details. The haunted Red Lion Pub located within the stone circle was originally built in the 16th century before becoming a coaching inn in the 19th century. The original 86ft well can still be seen and the pub is said to be home to a number of ghosts. This offers an interesting stop for a drink or some lunch. A browse around the small independent retailers and village setting is recommended to complete your trip. Travel info: 31 miles - 1 hr drive

This is an ideal family day out and there is much more to Beaulieu than cars! Located in the heart of the New Forest, Beaulieu estate has an ancient, chequered history dated back to 1204. In 1952, Lord Montagu opened Palace House and Gardens to the public for the first time, displaying 5 veteran cars in the entrance hall as a tribute to his late father. And the rest is history... Palace House, grounds and gardens are lovely to explore, dotted with various points of interest and include the conserved ruins of Beaulieu Abbey. The museum includes many vehicles with a fascinating history and its not all lost on the little ones. Formula 1 racing cars, world record breaking cars, fast cars, old cars. Cars from TV and films, monorail rides, an adventure playground and regular themed events should keep the family entertained all day. Check online for tickets, events and further details.

Looking for something a bit different? It's quite something to watch the hovercraft swooshing up the slipway as they go back and forth from the Isle of Wight. You can take a 10 minute return 'flight' from Southsea across the Solent to Ryde on the Isle of Wight where you land on the golden sandy beach, perfect for a paddle, a picnic or an ice cream. Look out for the Victorian sea forts on the way. Buses run regularly from the Esplanade if you wish to explore further or Ryde Superbowl is also there if you are looking for an indoor activity. If you have purchased a combined Hoverbus ticket, take the return 'flight' to head back over to Southsea and continue your nautical adventure to Portsmouth by Hoverbus, where the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (home of the Mary Rose), Gunwharf Quays designer shops and the Spinnaker Tower awaits! If you prefer to remain in Southsea, the slipway is located next to Clarence Pier and Amusement Park or head in the other direction for a stretch of sandy beach and Blue Reef Aquarium. A contemporary menu in a contemporary setting. You may find the menu daunting on arrival, so be prepared to consider your choice from the selection. A popular local bakery chain tucked on the end of the Market Square next to the Guildhall. All manner of sweet and savoury creations to tempt you for picnics and treats to take away. A wide range of breads and cakes are also for sale and well worth trying. They also have seating outside for lunch or a coffee and a snack and a little dine in café upstairs. This is very popular, so if it's busy, why not try their other smaller shop past Boots, near the traffic lights.

Britford Farm Shop and Cafe is a local favourite for a visit and an idea base for a Britford Village walk. Coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, either in the orchard outside or cosy indoors by the fire. Homemade ice creams and sorbets are really popular during holiday season. Check the website for opening days and times and pre-book a table if you can plan ahead.

There are also a good selection of bars and restaurants. Markets are held on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday markets vary between Hampshire Farmers Market, Antiques and Art and Design. Download The City Walk guide from the Visit Winchester website to learn how King Alfred and Winchester played their important part in English history during the Viking invasions. The guide includes a map of the key historical sites. A statue of King Alfred the Great stands at the heart of the city to symbolise his historical connection with this place. There is also a life size bronze of a horse and rider by Elizabeth Frink overlooking the High Street. Another key point to mention is the The Great Hall, which is the remains of Winchester Castle and home to King Arthur's Round Table. A good day out with plenty of places to visit on foot.
