Italian wood-fired, open-flame pizzeria is a great neighborhood hangout for families and friends. We always order Zucca Balsamica when we are there.

This is the original location of the famous Bakery Nouveau that's expanded now to two other neighborhoods. It really is the best French bakery in town and a must-stop if you are in West Seattle.

This is the good old American breakfast place. Located in the unlikely location under the West Seattle Bridge, the restaurant has been serving breakfast to West Seattle families and Port employees for eons. The place is surprisingly cheery due to the morning sun that streams through large picture windows. If you want a non-fancy, filling breakfast to start your long tourist day, stop by Chelan Cafe. You won't be disappointed.

One of the best Thai restaurants in the region is located right here in West Seattle. Crispy Garlic Chicken is Buddha Ruksa's signature dish and I have yet to find one that is as perfect as theirs. Often hard to get reservations, but a take-out is a popular option. They are closed on Mondays.

Sightseeing

Ditch the car and board the Water Taxi to downtown for Seattle's famous attractions. The crossing takes 15 minutes dock-to-dock (5 minutes during commute hours) and lands you right at the Downtown pier. Look for Mt. Rainier on clear days off the starboard side (right). Do the waterfront attractions (Segway tour for overview, the Great Wheel, Wings over WA, parasailing, etc.), then do the Hill Climb up to Pike Place Market (or take the elevator up). If you still have the energy, saunter over to Westlake Station on 5th Ave for the Monorail ride to Seattle Center to check out the Space Needle and Chihuly Garden & Glass exhibits. At the end of the day, take the Uber or Lyft back home.

Segway tours are fun ways to see the iconic sights in Seattle. "Seattle by Segway," located at the corner of Spring and Western, is within walking distance from the Water Taxi pier. It sure beats sitting on a tour bus and you can check off most of waterfront's must-see sights during the ride. No experience necessary. Even my parents in their 70's and 80's rode it and loved it! TIP: Check out Groupon for specials.

Lincoln Park is where families in West Seattle head to for picnics by the beach. There are 4.6 miles of walking paths, a wading pool, playgrounds and natural beaches with stunning views of Olympic Mountains. Sit on a driftwood and catch sunset from the beach that faces due west. Try something new while in Seattle and make a memory. If you haven't tried parasailing before, this is the time to do it-- especially if the sky is blue, breezes are warm and you are up for an adventure. No experience necessary.
