Hikes and Walks - mountains

We are spoilt with 3 Ezemvelo Nature Reserves in the Kamberg area. Highlights are Bushmen paintings - worth while visit (Kamberg & Giants Castle). Good trout fishing at Highmoor & Kamberg Reserve - river and dam. some fantastic Grassland walks and day hikes.
Highly recommended for the area - About 30km further on our Road, a beautiful well managed reserve AND RESTAURANT! A lovely scenic drive on tar road (less potholes than the Kamberg stretch), beautiful fauna along the landscape, a section of the drive is along the magnificent Bushmans river. Access to the reserve is through a boom gate entrance fee of roughly R50.00pp. From there, a great 7km drive to the touristy reception with a great selection of african curio's etc. Cold drinks for sale at the reception shop and a restaurant. Picnic sites and local walks (some short and easy), rivers to explore and hikes, bushman rock paintings etc available. SPECIAL HIGHLIGHT is their vulture hide - depending on Availability, 4-6 guests can book to spend a day at "The vulture hide" self drive (4×4 required). For more beautiful & precise information please visit the Giants Castle website - Lammergeire Hide.

CASH ONLY!! This reserve is roughly 10km from our cottage. A beautifully scenic drive on mostly good road surfaces (some dirt some tar). The occasional small 'bay' to pull over for photo's or even to explore. The reserve has an entrance fee of +-R60.00pp CASH ONLY payable at the boom gate. 2 walks are available to 2 different caves: AASVOELKRANS CAVE is an easy grassland walk (+- 1.5-2hour there) the last section down to cave is a very steep decent (looks more intimidating than it is). Well worth going down to enjoy the view and rock pools. This is a great spot to snack. CARACAL CAVE is a little further and a bit more strenuous with less water access. There is a stocked trout dam close to the parking area which is very easy to walk to and picnic. No reception or sale of cold drinks or snacks.

Roughly 10km from our place, is this somewhat neglected, under visited reserve. However offers a functional & informative historical rock art center. The reception closes for lunch between 12.30 and 2 daily. Guided bushman painting walks daily 9 and 11am (about 2km). There is a variety of other day walks available too. The reception does sell cold drinks. Jungle gym at parking area probably intended for use of chalet guests, but the accommodation seems quiet. Picnic facility.

Grindstone Restaurant, open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

On your way in or out from the cottage try GRINDSTONE - 3 kamberg Road near Rosetta and R103. They are a very charming little restaurant doing artisan pizza and curry. Guests like to pick up a take away on route to our cottage on a Friday afternoon or Sunday lunch stop on guests way home. Really quaint spot, worth the stop.
