Neighborhoods

The Parkside neighborhood is on the north side of the Sunset District and bordered by Stern Grove Park. It is known as a safe, family oriented area with the best schools in the city. It also tends to have less of a homeless population than other parts of the city. Over the last few years the neighborhood has become cool with unpretentious foodies thanks to restaurants such as Dumpling Kitchen, Thành Long (Vietnamese restaurant), Andy Town Coffee, Devil’s Food Baking Company, Polly Ann Ice Cream, among many others. You can find many articles on the Internet about the area’s various eateries. Food scene

You’ll feel like you’re in Hong Kong! Best pineapple buns in SF (in our opinion), wonderful egg tarts, Portuguese egg tarts, and barbecue pork buns. Try the Hong Kong milk tea for a caffeine jolt.

Great soup filled dumplings (xiao long bao). The owner used to operate Dumpling Kitchen down the street, retired, but got bored and opened up Dumpling Specialist. Same great dumplings.

Freshly churned Italian gelato in scrumptious flavors including chocolate, taro, avocado. Rival to Polly Ann ice cream on Noriega. In our opinion, Marco Polo wins on taste while Polly Ann wins on atmosphere.

Argentinian empanadas, authentic churros, and great coffee make this a neighborhood favorite. Yes, it’s next door to 7-11, but the food and atmosphere make up for that!

Sightseeing

Tucked inside Golden Gate Park, you’ll find a 430 foot man-made waterfall on Strawberry Hill. Take the stairs to the top of the waterfall, then climb up the hill, and you’ll find sweeping views of the Bay Area, including Golden Gate Bridge.

Ocean Beach is a beautiful SF institution. Yes, it’s cold and often not suitable for lying out, but its rugged beauty and sunsets merit a long walk along its shores. There are many entrances to Ocean Beach; we suggest going straight down Taraval until it hits the beach or accessing the beach by parking between Rivera and Santiago, then walking down the steps.

There’s so much to explore in this magical park! We’d suggest starting with Strawberry Hill (see separate entry), exploring the California Academy of Sciences, DeYoung Art Museum and Japanese Tea Garden.
