Food Scene

Toronto's top-rated breakfast sandwich (Rise 'n Shine or Veggie Rise), eggs topped with bacon or avocado, tomatoes and cheese nestled between two buttery biscuits. Tip: order on Ritual for a deep discount and to avoid the sometimes busy, kid-friendly space if that's not your vibe.

Because every meal here is incredibly delish! Plus, the front of the café is stocked with cute bodega-type last-minute grocery items, like bread, eggs, juice and snacks. It's about a 15-minute walk from the house, so further afield but the reasonable pricing and quality are worth it. The same awesome lady owns Eulalie's, another laid-back gem nearby on Ashdale. Tip: The canelés (only available on Sundays are my favourite pastry in the city.

Wood-fired pizza in a family-friendly environment where kids can be as noisy or rambunctious as they need to be. Pizza is decent or above-average, and there's a solid selection of gelato. Avoid the over-priced pastas and always ask for bread for the table while you wait.

Old school diner that has a retro menu that hasn't changed in the past couple decades. Solid breakfast standbys like eggs and your choice of meat plus friendly staff make it worth it, as long as you don't mind sticky seats and local characters from the still-gentrifying neighbourhood. Tip: Go in your pyjamas and no one will bat an eye.

Good for overall organic or whole food grocery essentials, but I go for St John's bakery stuff, an award-winning non-profit social enterprise producing Toronto's best organic breads. The Bree loaf is the best. They also have Petite Thuet baguettes at the cash and make good deli-style sandwiches to go.

Drinks & Nightlife

This craft gastropub has Japanese-influenced local brews available in the pub or by the door in cans to go. The cider is really good and only available seated (not for sale in cans to go).
