Statues of Simon Bolivar can be found throughout South America, however, this statue in Pereira is a naked Bolivar on horseback, making it that bit more interesting. The square is also a nice place to sit and people watch.

The auditorium for 392 people is one of the spaces of the Lucy Tejada Cultural Centre, where they carry out artistic presentations and other events. This building, in which houses the Municipal Institute of Culture and Tourism Development and the Correa Ramon Mejia Public Library, among others, is located in Ciudad Victoria, in the centre of Pereira.

An excellent site for bird watching is the Botanical Garden of the Technological University of Pereira, where there are 168 species of birds - of which 15 are migratory -. There also have been identified 290 varieties of vegetables, seven mammals and three amphibians. The garden features a 0.3 hectare nursery where plants are sold and technical assistance is provided.

Lake Otún
The Otún Lake is one of the highlights of Los Nevados National Natural Park, which is reached from Pereira after a journey of between five and seven hours by land to the northeast. This body of water, measuring about 1.5 square kilometres, is located 3950 meters above the sea. There, among other activities, it is possible to go camping and trout fishing.

In this 58,300 hectare reserve you can enjoy activities such as biking and ice and rock climbing. Some birds that inhabit the park are the moor hummingbird (endemic to the region), the crested eagle, Andean duck, red partridge and condor.

14 miles east of Pereira can visit the Otún Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, a protected area of 489 hectares characterized by rainforest vegetation and sub-Andean forest. This place, where there are 259 species of flora (including oak, cherry and romerón), is ideal for bird watching and butterflies. There cane skunks, tapir and other animals inhabit the zone.

Parque Regional Natural Ucumari is a park-come-zoo where you can see various species of animals and find out more about them. It’s a beautiful space with stunning views of the surrounding luscious countryside. There are also plenty of hiking trails where you can enjoy the scenery.
If you have time, consider going on a bike tour where you’ll ride through the beautiful plantations in the Andes Mountains and descend to the mighty Cauca River.
