The narrow streets of the zone of Castello di Cagliari, bring to mind a bygone era in which the city was dominated first by the Pisans and then by the Aragones. Built white limestone stone, the walls e the towers of the ancient city shine under the sun and offer a magnificent view, especially if you come to the sea, as did the English novelist DH Lawrence which, in 1921, described the city as "a Jerusalem without trees".

The Castello area is the oldest of the historic districts of Cagliari. Perched on a hill, about a hundred meters above sea level, the Pisans founded it in the 13th century, fortified it and established the seats of power. From then until the second postwar period, Castello has been the heart of the administration and the nobility of Cagliari. Within its walls it contains the most famous attractions of Cagliari, but even just a walk here will make you take a fascinating dip into the past.
