Food Scene

They have AVOCADO! Add it to anything. Sounds silly, but it's hard to find food that's not just fried in rural East Texas. Pete & Cezila opened this place after running a deli in Houston for many years. They know their stuff. They have a big menu, and Pete will often make adjustments to accommodate food allergies / sensitivities. It's the best place to eat in the area. NOTE: They actually serve breakfast even though they don't have any menu posted. Call ahead to make sure they're open - it's a small town so sometimes they close early.

CAPPUCCINO & CHAI LATTES! Yes! If you're passing through East Texas, this is a coffee and tea drinkers haven. AND they have COCONUT MILK and other milk alternatives, in addition to a pretty tasty menu. My vote is for the AVOCADO SALAD. In a hurry? Call your order in for food/drinks. They are small and busy, so it can take awhile. A long while. But they play throw back movies and have a cozy seating area with games to keep you chill. In terms of fancy coffee in EAST TEXAS, you won't find much else. If you do - please share! http://www.milamcoffeehouse-bakery.com/

Stop by the Fredonia for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a just a cocktail at the bar, you won't be disappointed. It almost feels like you're in the city. It's southern food & drink done up. Your foodie will appreciate it - a break from everything fried! Mid-century modern style hotel newly renovated and re-opened this past year. The rooms are lux too, and not too expensive if you need to be in the area.

Local mediterranean restaurant for those days when you're craving dolmas and hummus! This place doesn't have an official Gluten Free menu, but if you ask the staff, they're more than happy to accommodate you. Their falafel is GF and they'll bring you veggies instead of pita for the hummus, greek salad or another side instead of tabouli etc. Great little find in East Texas. Not a chain!

Wide selection of beers, including CIDERs for those of you who are GLUTEN FREE. Salads, Tacos, Burgers, vegetarian options as well. NOTE: the main dining / bar space is small and can be quite crowded / noisy during prime hours - our recommendation, go on off hours or be prepared. Open to 1am on Saturdays. There is a venue space here as well - not sure what the schedule is. http://www.maklemores.net/index.html

Entertainment & Activities

WATERSLIDES! So much fun for kids and adults. You have to pay an entrance fee, but it's totally worth it to shoot into the lake on the big waterslide, jump off a diving platform, or just hang out on the beach. You can rent a picnic table or cabana for groups. Life jackets available for rent for the kiddos. NOTE: the place could use some maintenance / upkeep, it's no 6 Flags, its actually owned and run by the local school. Keeping it local!

Looking for that specialty health food store item out in the sticks and you don't want to drive to Houston or College Station, try Granary Street in Nacogdoches. They have a pretty good selection of Gluten Free items, vitamins/supplements, non-toxic bath/house products, Low Temp Pasteurized Mill King WHOLE MILK!, Vegan/Alternative Milks & Cheeses, Grass Fed Meats, a small selection of organic raw cheeses, a few organic produce items and eggs, sizable healthy snacks, spices, and dry goods selection.
