A little bit about Cabanas de Tavira where our apartment is located and some of our favourite places to visit within easy access, walking, train and/or car.
A 45 minute walk or a 15 minute train journey from our apartment isTavira, a small city on Portugal’s Algarve coast close to Cabanas. It straddles the Gilão River, which reaches the sea through the inlets and lagoons of Ria Formosa Natural Park. Tavira Island has a long, sandy beach, plus salt pans that attract flamingos, spoonbills and other wading birds. In the center, medieval Tavira Castle has city views. The Santa María do Castelo Church houses the tombs of 7 knights killed by the Moors.

Golf
5 minutes from the apartment, the Benamor 18 hole course is endorsing its growing reputation for its player enjoyment and with the improvement of the access from the motorway Via de Infante to Tavira is making the whole area much quicker to reach. The Benamor Golf Course is laid out on mainly undulating land and the fairways offers pleasant views both to the Atlantic Ocean and the hills of the Serra do Caldeirao. The accuracy of the shot of the golfer is particularly called upon by the architects retention of as many of the old trees as feasible. These natural obstacles coupled with strategic placed bunkers and occasional water hazards make the course a worthwhile challenge.

The Quinta do Vale golf course has been designed to attract golfers of every level and will be a strong candidate for hosting important international championships.
Covering an area of 75 hectares, the course is fully integrated into the surrounding natural landscape, taking full advantage of the undulating terrain giving a unique character to each of the 18 holes.

15 minutes drive from the apartment. Golf course designed by Jack Nicholas. Absolutely fantastic on every level. Very challenging ut extremely enjoyable. The service is excellent. They welcome you, take your clubs, set up the golf buggy (with integrated GPS yardage to the flag in each hole), and after the round they even clean your clubs.
1 hour before your T-time they give you one hour in the range included in the green fee.

Tavira Island (Portuguese: Ilha de Tavira) is found South of the city and can only be reached by boat, which departs from the city center and from Quatro-Aguas. The Island is 11Km long and varies between 1Km and 150m width. It’s considered to be one of the best beaches in the Algarve Region, and it includes areas where naturism can be practised without problems. The Island belongs to the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve, which is popular it’s birds and flamingos, a delight for bird lovers.

Situated next to the river separating Portugal from Spain. This is a great day out....shopping, sightseeing, restaurants...you can also take the short ferry to Ayamonte in Spain, but be aware of the 1 hour time difference!

The walk from the apartment to the water taxi location takes about 20 minutes. If you have small children or elderly you can drive to this parking location (5 minutes) and then have a very short 2 minute walk to the water taxi location.
