A slow drive up this unpaved road is for the more adventurous. Preferably done in a SUV during summer. Good stops by the river coming down the mountain for a picnic lunch and beautiful views. Not for people scared of heights. Slowly make your way up to the Alpine Visitor Center at around 12,000 feet above sea level. And then drive down easily on the paved road down.

Verkehrsmittel
You will need a car or SUV
In winter season you will need a 4 wheel drive or ALL WHEEL DRIVE SUV for safe driving during winter in the mountains as recommended by the Department of Public Safety. Winter season is from November to April. Snow usually starts later November around Thanksgiving and ends late April.

Comfortable hiking shoes.
Warm clothes especially for fall, winter and spring. Layering is an excellent way to dress during the colder season so you can take layers off as you warm up if hiking. Head and neck scarfs and gloves are very important in the winter season and sunscreen is a must to protect from high UV rays in the mountains. Shoes with grip is important in the snow and ice of winter.
Weather changes quickly in the mountains even in summer, so always have warmer clothes or layers as you hike and an umbrella even in summer.

Stay healthy.
Drink lots of water to avoid mountain sickness. You will be at an elevation of 7,500 feet above sea level.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol. If you have high blood pressure, make sure you take your medicine and consult with your doctor. You may need extra blood pressure medicine since blood pressure tends to increase at higher elevations. So monitor your blood pressure. Take it easy especially the first few days and enjoy the amazing mountain views from our log home and your car. Avoid excessive hiking.

Wildlife safety
Stay at least 75 feet (23 meters) or about two bus-lengths away from all wildlife. We advise keeping at least 120 feet (36 meters) or about three bus-lengths away from black bears, moose, and mountain lions. Stay safe and never assume you are the one that can get away with a close encounter.
