Just head downtown (there's plenty of free or inexpensive parking) and start anywhere along the River Walk. It's a great place for walking, biking, or relaxing. Great places to take family photos.
Please use extreme caution around the river. It is highly recommended to wear a life vest even if you are in very shallow water. The undercurrent of the river is much stronger than you expect. There are multiple deaths each year from kids and adults wading in the river without a life vest.

Food scene
I love going to Banks Food Hall. There are several restaurants so if you are with a group everyone can get their choice. Right now there is a great bar, coffee shop with pastries, Mexican, fancy hot dogs, Poke Bowls (fresh fish and vegetables that sounded gross to me but is now an addiction), and Jeremiahs (soft serve ice cream and Italian ice - you can have them separate or together).
Sit inside or on the patio for some great people watching.
