My favorite places in Burgas and the area of Kraimorie

I have many favorite places around Kraimorie like the unique Nature Conservation Area "Poda", where You can watch over 250 species of birds, St. Anastasia Island which is one very mysterious and full of history place, Lovely little fish Restaurant "Neptun" situated on the sea rocks in Kraimorie where You can the most delicious sea food, and of course the Port of Burgas and its beautiful Promenade.
Burgas is an unique place for every birdwatcher. What is making it different from any other Bulgarian site, is the all-year round abundance of birds. This is the only Bulgarian area where three big wetlands have been preserved - Atanasovsko Lake, Burgas Lake (Vaya) and Manra Complex. Being very different - hyperhalline, brakish and fresh water wetlands, together with the sea they provide very different ecological conditions and suitable habitats for many birds, including endangered ones. This makes Burgas one of the few European cities surrounded by wetlands of international importance for birds. The city is situated on one of the major migration flyways in Europe, known as Via Pontica. The unique position at the westernmost point of the entire Black Sea coastline is the reason for extremmely intensive bird migration here, as most of the birds follow the coastline. Milions of passerines, but also waders, gulls and terns, bee-eaters, swifts and other, together with more than 200,000 White Storks and 100,000 Raptors of over 30 species pass every season over the city. Is it not natural in this case Burgas to be recognised as the Bird Capital of Bulgaria!

Just meters away from the seaside and at the same time next to Burgas downtown, the Neptune Restaurant is located in a remarkable building constructed in 1948 by a German architect. The restaurant has two floors revealing an incredible sea view, 140 seats, and a spacious summer garden, which can seat another 80 guests.

The earliest human presence on the island is evidenced during the period of late antiquity (IV – VI century). A proof of this is the abundant ceramic material found in underwater researches conducted in 1973. During the last decade of the 17th century, the Saint Anastasia Island is marked on the map of the Black Sea for the first time by the Dutch cartographer Nicholaes Witsen. The monastery “St. Anastasia Pharmacolitria (Healer)” is the only insular cloister in Bulgaria part of which is preserved until today. The Bulgarian “Alcatraz” The cloister existed until 1923 when the monastery was turned into a prison. The Lighthouse In 1889, the lighthouse on the island was built by a French company. It was mounted on an iron pole, raised 40 metres above the sea level, and in good weather its light was visible for 10 miles.
