Matakana Farmers Market. Open Saturday mornings from about 8.30 am till 1 pm. Organics, chutneys and jams, fish, wines. It’s where Aucklanders head for a Saturday ‘experience’. Can be insanely busy - especially on holiday weekends.

Mangawhai Market. Saturday mornings. Good foods, good coffee and breads and local olive oils. Lots of plants usually. I like this Market and it’s also on the way to great east coast beaches heading north.

Arts & Culture

Gibbs Farm is a privately owned sculpture park and really hard to get in to! You need to book months in advance and sometimes this will be thru’ a ‘charity day’ - which means you’ll pay. It takes the best part of a day to get around it all but these are some of the most powerful and best sculptures you’ll see in your lifetime.

Good walk up to the Dome and stunning views back over to Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf. Noisy tho’ because of the nearby SH1. A reasonable simple ‘Kiwi’ cafe at the car park.

Atiu Creek Regional Park was gifted to Aucklanders. But, because it’s on the West Coast, overlooking the fabulous Kaipara Harbour, Aucklanders hardy experience it. If you want great expanses and varied landscape...... and to be free from the crowds, this is a great place. No cafes anywhere about so take your own picnic.

Everything Else

‘Fred’s scrap yard’ at 3 Hood Street and The ‘Hospice’ op shop on the main road, Rodney Street are both gems if you’re looking to reuse/recycle/repurpose! I’ve found real gems in both places..... but it can take time!
