You will find this Milwaukee institution down in Bayview, south of downtown. In this old, midwestern bar you will find some amazing and authentic Serbian cuisine and hospitality. Stuffed grape leaves, goat cheese, roasted lamb, duck, etc. Bring friends and be prepared to spend most of the evening, as the food is cooked to order, and it takes a while. But it's well worth it. Blocks away from my house you can connect with the Oak Leaf Trail -- the jewel in the crown of Milwaukee County's extensive trail system. You can catch the trail either at Brady St. & Prospect Ave (where you will find a Bublr Bike Rental stand), or at Oakland Ave. and North Ave (which is what I prefer -- less traffic getting there). The trail meanders more than 115 miles in and around the city of Milwaukee on a changing terrain of flat rural plains and hilly city streets. Nearly a quarter of the trail hugs the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan.

If books are your thing, this is possibly the best independent book store in the state. It specializes in small press offerings and poetry. Plan to spend a lot of time browsing for works you can not find elsewhere.

I've never been there myself, but guests with small kids say it's great.

Discovery World has lots to offer families (Grade school and older kids). Set in a beautiful location with a magnificent view of the lake, next to the Milwaukee Art Museum. You can pack a lunch and bring it to eat there or buy food on location.(limited choices). Super place to go on a rainy day with kids.

A nice, spacious, family friendly library with good activities for kids, such as pajama storytimes and playgroups with readings.

The domes were constructed between 1959 and 1967 (The Show Dome, the Tropical Dome, and the Arid Dome), and they contain a vast array of flora that one observer called “a zoo for plants.” First Lady Lady Bird Johnson officially dedicated the Show Dome at its opening ceremony in 1965. A nice place to take kids.

The Milwaukee Art Museum is one of the largest museums in the country. Check to see if there are any special shows in town, or just go see their impressive collection, with includes one of the largest collections of works by Wisconsin native Georgia O'Keeffe.

It's especially worth the trip if there's a good special exhibit there (and there usually is). If you are so inclined, check out the latest IMAX show (connected in the same building) and / or stroll through the Central Public Library (across the street) after your visit.

Green Gallery is tiny, but it consistently puts together exhibitions which are well-considered, showcases a good mix of both Milwaukee-based and out-of-town artists, and is connected to the greater contemporary art world.
