Camber Castle lies between Rye and Winchelsea in a field !. There is no vehicle access to the castle but it is a one-mile walk on footpaths from Rye. The exterior is viewable at any time but the interior is only open by guided tour. It is managed by Sussex Wildlife Trust .

Strangely appealing modern brutalism on the edge of the shingle. From a distance in the evening it can look like some strange ship rounding the headland.

The former home of Derek Jarman artist and film maker. The surrounding area formed the basis for many scenes in his art house films. Now mercifully saved by crowd funding and a large donation from Tate Modern for aspiring artists to enjoy.

City/town information

Easily accessible by bus or car, since the ferries left the town looks better than ever. The Leas park is worth a walk through as it nestles on the cliff side superb views and some really tranquil spots. Theres a growing and thriving artistic quarter on the old High St, and a beautifully renovated old harbour station which is now part of a walking and cycling route.

Car or bus ride away. A traditional seaside town, but with loads more ! Brilliant second hand shops, bars and cafes along George Street and the old High Street worth a visit. The Norman ruins of Hastings Castle, once home to William the Conqueror, overlook the English Channel. East along the shingle seafront of Stade beach, Hastings Fishermen’s Museum and Shipwreck Museum document maritime history. The Jerwood Gallery shows contemporary art. Always interesting to walk around the fishing boats which are kept on the beach.
